A cool lightning effect can be easily created using Photoshop cs3. It some what looks like this 

So how to do this ??
Simple five steps 
Step 1: Open ur photoshop !! File -- > New file ---> set parameters as show below

Step 2:Now Select Gradiant tool !! press D for default!! Apply it to blank page from top to bottom holding shift key !! Make sure your foreground and background colors are set to default before applying !! see pic below 

Step 3: Now goto filter ---> render ---> difference clouds 

Step 4 : Invert the colours.  Press ctrl + I
After inverting,  it looks like this

Step 5: Goto image ----> Adjustment ---> levels
             Adjust middle handler as show below!!

You are almost done !! Just play with Color balance option !!
See so simple. In 5 steps !! Lightning effect .
